NetApp, Sunnyvale, CA (1999-2009)

Author of NetApp's Simple Steve blog - http://blogs.netapp.com/simple_steve (no longer archived, but was consistently among the 10 most popular at NetApp).

Last assignment was a rich interactive storage management web application (departed prior to completion).

Technical lead for NetApp System Manager, a storage management application written in .NET/C# for Microsoft Management Console (MMC). Conducted Cooper-style interaction design, simplified work flows, coordinated the efforts of a medium-size engineering team (development, QA, publications) spread between Sunnyvale and Bangalore.

Helped evangelize internationalization issues to engineering organization, advised on i18n issues, fixed bugs, and retrofitted some existing features for i18n.

Lead software engineer for a Java GUI application implementing storage management functionality. Coordinated efforts of a team of engineers distributed across four sites in US and India. Designed and implemented GUI base classes and application infrastructure and API interfaces, build and release system.

Helped interview, hire and mentor a storage management development team in Bangalore, India (30+ hires in one year, site now numbers over a thousand). Participated in international travel, telephone screens and visitor hosting to accomplish this. Helped to fill management gaps when the team lacked resources.

Lead software engineer for the FilerView™ product, a web-based tool for administration of NetApp™ network storage servers. Responsible for architecture, implementation, bug fixes, escalations, software builds, and releases. Development consists of Java applets and servlets, as well as C in the ONTAP™ micro kernel. Worked productively with QA, technical publications, and customer support groups.

Implemented enhancements and fixes to the Autosupport feature, a remote alerting and data collection tool. Worked with customer support to boost customer participation in this service, resulting in improved system uptime. Performed analysis of RPC cross-talk issues in the kernel, also resulting in increased system availability.

Participant in engineering reviews of user interface issues and overall interface design simplicity. Conducted usability tests, provided feedback to engineering via technical talks.

Extensive use of perl for custom reports and web scripts. Designed and implemented perl-based conference room scheduler, used to coordinate room scheduling at more than 20 corporate locations.

AT&T Bell Labs, San Jose, CA

Software engineer for the GeoPlex project, a peer-to-peer internet platform. Java, C and perl programming. SDK development and support. Authored compelling user interfaces which leveraged the capabilities (authentication, secure transport, IM, email, IP telephony) of the underlying platform. Provided training and examples for SDK development, met with customers.

Co-authored an early VRML 3D browser implementation. Wrote a scan line converter and scene navigator in Visual C++, later converted to Direct3D.

Wrote a perl web-based project status report tool for the project.

AT&T Bell Labs, Middletown, NJ

Software engineer in a rapid prototyping group. Successfully brought to completion several projects in the area of telephone and data circuit ordering, service delivery and maintenance. Group responsible for design, procurement, implementation, deployment, and ongoing maintenance of these services. C, OpenLook X11, Informix database.

CaseWorker Tool, a work flow tool for tracking ordering and provisioning of voice and digital MegaCom data circuits.

MegaOSS, a tool for proactive monitoring, remote diagnosis and repair of voice and data circuits.
